McDonald’s Shamrock shake is a bit of a tradition for me. It’s sad but true. I remember back in the day when not all stores in the chain would have them. We would sometimes drive around on the rumor that a specific location had it.
I had one recently, but while it was delicious, the ethics behind it didn’t make me feel great. So I made one at home. And I have a few other variations I want to try. That’s why I numbered this recipe #1, there will be at least one more.
By the way, the very bright green comes from 8 drops of green food coloring. It would be easy to make it a more minty green by adding less green and a little yellow. But it matches my non-vegan cookies.
Vegan Shamrock Shake #1
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients (1 shake)
- 1 cup vanilla soy ice cream
- 1 cup almond/coconut milk
- 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon mint extract
- 8 drops green food coloring
- soy-based whipped cream for topping
Instructions
Place ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Quick and easy.
Did you ever love McD shakes?

Boy, did I ever love Shamrock shakes! Back in my pre-vegan days, I never missed my annual mint shake. Thanks for sharing!
This was actually a pretty good approximation. And vegans often have these items at home anyways.

I want to make one right now. What brand of soy whipped cream do you use?

You know what’s sad, I have no idea what brand it is. I’ll have to let you know next time I think of it at home. Our local health food store switches it up all the time, I just grab what they have.
In case anyone else is wondering, I used soyatoo.
I’ve never had a McD’s shake, but I do love Chick-fil-a shakes. Their Peach flavor is addicting.
Love the idea of this – I’d try it with spinach to add nutrients and make it green!
That’s what my banana version is going to have, a healthy shamrock shake in a way
Peach shake sounds amazing too. I have never ever been to Chick-fil-a. It’s a good thing we don’t have a sonic near us because hubby became addicted when we visited the south.
How pretty! I don’t think I’ve ever had a McD’s shake, but I used to absolutely love Dairy Queen Blizzards. Yummmm. Want to make a vegan one of those for me?

I probably could if I had a vitamix. Maybe I’ll try in the food processor?
If it works in a food processor, then I’d be extra-happy, since I don’t have any of those fancy mixing machines. Just a magic bullet. With really dull blades and a worn out motor. It’s probably time to update.

[...] This is probably the most expensive of the three shamrock shakes I plan on sharing with my readers. This is because it contains my favorite but pricey coconut ice cream. It also does not simulate the real McD’s shamrock shake as well as shamrock shake version #1. [...]
RIGHT before i stopped eating dairy, i had a shamrock shake and thought it was the most delicious thing ever. i think this would be even more delicious
i looove that green color!
